Pitmaster IQ or WSM?

Advice please.....

I've had numerous successes smoking low and slow on my OTP (57). The only slight issue I've had is keeping a steady low temp. Combined with my iGrill, I can keep it fairly low but fluctuates a wee bit too much.

Question......

Pitmaster IQ or do I really need a WSM or equivalent?

I'd go with the WSM it will add more flexibility to your cooks and becomes set and go for short to medium cooks as you learn to use it, it will run on long cooks too but you will need to check it and adjust the vents etc...

Sorry mate it's like asking should I get a turbo for my motor or a DB9. The Ique will work whatever smoker or BBQ you want to use it on with the right adaptor. You could fork out for a WSM and still not get a good cook as you don't get a steady draft through your garden, like us, which is why I bought my Ique.
I'm sorry but to me the question reads like I want a WSM and am looking for good reasons to fork out the money.
A smoker is an ideal step up from a kettle, and the Ique is a great addition to a BBQ/Smoker you may well need both
In your position, with the funds I'd go for the WSM (although I'd stick with my ProQ)

Sorry mate it's like asking should I get a turbo for my motor or a DB9. The Ique will work whatever smoker or BBQ you want to use it on with the right adaptor. You could fork out for a WSM and still not get a good cook as you don't get a steady draft through your garden, like us, which is why I bought my Ique.

Maybe I should have stated that I don't really have the funds to pay out for a WSM, hence I was kinda hoping I could get away with an Ique. But as usual, you're right again Keith, of course I'd love to have a WSM or a ProQ

And for the record, I did add a set of Weber twin 40's to my MkI Escort Mexico that blew all the 3 litre Ghia Capris out of the water back in the day. But I do get your point

One of my parents neighbors had an original Mexico which I loved - just had a look at the price of them these days - £20k and up [gulp!]

The Ique does a great job - if you do order one, order a spare probe or two at the same time - (they are not expensive) my original probe developed a fault & the postage for just two probes was a bit hard to swallow!

They were and still are beautiful motors and you're right, so expensive.....if only I'd kept mine!! In fact, I had a few decent MKIs.

Do you think an Ique would resolve my minor issues for the time being?

Yes it will solve your bbq problems, especially now the hot sultry summer weather we have been having is waning
As to the motor problem just remember" Nostalgia's not what it used to be" and I've never really been in to motors so that ends my input into that topic

Honest advice... The IQ on a kettle is ploughing money in to try to achieve something that the kettle isn't that great at. Furthermore I guess you're trying to get temps down and the IQ probably isn't going to be a great help there.

My old man can get temps down to just under 300F using bricks and a tray of water in his kettle, I'd say shoot for that and adapt your style for those temps. Much lower cost.

Other option is look at a ProQ Frontier which can be got for little more than an IQ shipped to you. Much better solution if you want to cook in the lower range.

Final option and the one I'd go for is use bricks and water for now, save a bit of cash and get a WSM a bit later. You'll learn a lot about cooking hot and fast in the short term and then later on you get to play with a great smoker.

Another option is to get a Smokenator from the US, i can keep the temp's down at 225-250 quite easily the only downside is that you'll need to refill it every 6hrs.
