Hi to All!

Post by kiwi46 »

Hi

My name is Gareth and i live in Worcester, although originally from New Zealand so a big bbq fan.

I recently posted about getting a new gas grill and someone mentioned a Green Mountain pellet grill. After investigating these i have become very interested in them. Does anyone here own one and can tell me approx running cost as it seems to be difficult to work it out. I need to grill on it as well i would like to slow cook.

Really interesting forum!

Looking forward to becoming part of the community.

According to their web site, their pellets are consumed at about 0.6kg per hour if cooking at 160c - so you will get 21 hours or so per bag which cost £16.6 each. So expensive for grilling compared with decent charcoal.

Edit: Doesn't say what consumption at lower temps is like - but guessing better. So cheaper to run for low n slow cooking would be my guess. But still a lot more expensive than charcoal on a kamado or combination of a Weber Smokey Mountain and a Webber grill?

But the build quality & convenience looks good.

I don't own a GMG but do own a Traeger (another type of pellet cooker) and i find i tend to get through a bag every 4-6 cooks and i mainly cook low and slow. If grilling with it i'll get much more cooks with it.

You can grill with a pellet cooker and the results will be similar to using a gas BBQ, but will a bit of extra added flavour.

I smoke on a GMG Daniel Boone.
Pellet consumption is pretty much as stated. I love its convenience, no fire watching, no worrying about running out of fuel. I've smoked 12+hrs on a hopper full and still had some left. I like my sleep too much.

I've not grilled on it but I've seen it running at around 500f, if only for a little while. Any questions feel free. I posted a review on here http://www.bbbqs.com/Forum/viewtopic.ph ... 039#p22039

Or I'm sure Nick at americanbbq company can help out.

Cheers
Nick

*Edit. I have some catering to take care of on Monday/Tuesday. Im quite happy to crank it up afterwards to see how much pellets get used at full temp.
