Funnily enough there are a fair few BBQ restaurants around here and they all use electric smokers - I haven't seen any trace of smoke ring on their food

Thanks Dave, I've yet to cook on my BBQ, doing it tonight! Just a chicken and some turkey until I can source a decent butcher in Brum.
