Hi Dave,
Can I offer a 3rd way. I recently had this dilemma and couldnt decide between the 22 the ProQ had it on points.....but I opted for the Landmann Tennessee smoker, an offset model that I secured online for £108 from toolbox?

Its early days and I have had to fiddle with the smoker box to get temp (only reversing the charcoal grates from landscape to portrait) but the construction is solid, the offset barrel allows for grilling and smoking and it looks like a good purchase for me.

I think there a couple of others thathave them on here and there are a couple of youtube videos......


You have to be a little careful here as the majority of folk seem to "have a bit of a problem"........."so I spend a few quid on barbecues......I can handle it........"

Thanks for the input there, Tiny, I'd spotted that offer and thought it may be too good to be true! Well, now I'm back to having two to choose from Do you think the Landmann would be suitable for both hot and cold smoking? I'm thinking the ProQ may still have the edge as I'll be a little limited for storage space, but I'm open to persuasion and the Landmann certainly seems like a friendlier option as far as my wallet goes. I've already got a bit of a problem when it comes to anything cooking related, smoking its a natural step up for my addiction. I mean, I've got a stovetop smoker, but I kinda 'need' a real outdoor one, right? At least I'm not buying any more knives...

Cant comment on cold smoking but would assume upright will be better than offset.

Ah, cooking knives, I am over that now......think my worst dally was cherry red le creuset, think I have just over 4 tonnes oil wrapped and stored for my sons when they grow up....

Good luck with your bbq hunt I dont think there are any wrong answers as whatever happens there will be smoked meat......

I'm back! and after a lot of research this morning I took a delivery of a brand new, shiny, all the gubbins ProQ Excel 20. And at the perfect time of year for BBQ looking forward to participating in this forum some more and no doubt I'll have a few questions ahead of my first cook this Saturday. I cannot wait!
