I think our grates maybe slightly different, mine are only vertical bars with 2 horizonals holding them together, applying them both vertically with one bars up / one bars down will still result in the same gaps allowing coals to drop through.

Not daft at all, I thought the same thing, although the basket would be too big to fit in the firebox. I could cut it down, however - @tommo666 has found a gem there! thanks dude, this was exactly what I was looking for, despite being a guitarist and previously owning a mesa boogie cab with a very similar grill, totally didn't think of searching for that on ebay! I have ordered that.
I will post the results incase anyone is interest / has the same probs in future
