I have passed these plans onto a local fabricator, they can make them out of thicker steel than the drums.
They will give me an estmate, when this is done, but a one off would be expensive!
It would be cheaper if a few were commisioned.
What thickness of steel are the pricing on do you know?

Not yet, they are flat out making catering equip for the Olympics at the moment!
When that is finished I will have a sit down with them.
What ml steel would you be looking for?

Where did you get those grates for your UDS?

Also - can you give any advice on removing any internal paint/liner in a UDS?

The grates come from Homebase @ £4.99 a pop, hurry if you want to buy them as they are in short supply due to the store ordering stock in Feb for the British BBQ season?
Burning out the drums well should get rid of the outside paint, none of the drums that I have used have had liners in them.
Other members have put up posts re the dreaded liner, maybe put up a post in Anything Butt?

Cheers

I see they are 53cm - while the Weber ones are 56cm. How did you secure yours in - using bolts on the side? If so, did you use 3 or 4 bolts around the barrel?

The grates are 53cm but they fit fine, not as sturdy as Weber ones, but do the job!
They are placed on three bolts spaced, one every 2ft around the drum.
Bottom grate approx 2ft above top of firepit, next approx 1in below top of drum.

Hope this helps

Right - got the grills. To take the guesswork out of it - what size bolts did you use to hang these on and where did you get them?

M40 stainless, with a washer on either side of the drum

What is the ideal length? Keeping in mind if the bots re too short, the grate at fall through, and if too long, it is a pain in the bottom to get the grates in and out.
