What kind of prices have they offered ya?

Prices as follows:

"We sell hardwood logs at £8.50 for large net bags, £75 for a builders aggregate bag, £95 for a half truck load and £180 for a full truck load.
It's 100% hardwood and all locally sourced. We deliver to most of south Manchester for free."

I've mailed back to ask what weigh the large net bags would be and whether they discern between different types of hardwood (if I specifically required cherry for example). I can only gauge it from the 2 kilos I purchased online which came in (with delivery) around £12.

Sounds like a good source though, especially when I start smoking more often.

Whaddya think?!

Bloody hell that's good! I asked about specific woods - they can provide! I was asking about oak, apple or cherry. And I think the guy said a large net bag was 10kg. That's the cheapest I've seen by a long shot :D

Wow..that is good then.
Very good in fact. Good find Dave.

Had a quick look online last night re cooking fish on a smoker (big fan of fish) - looks like a winner too. Need to sell this smoker idea to the other half: essentially it's not just a 'pulled pork' machine :)

Btw - close to sourcing a 2nd hand 'Landmann Grill Chef 31347' (it's in Norfolk but we have relatives down there who can pick it up for us). Usually cost around £100, but the guys selling to us for £15 - not bad nick at all, but considering I'm using it for the smoker build, that's not a biggy. Lid should be around 22.5".
I'll use as much as I can from it (Lid, grill even wheels and legs if poss).
Also have an old cows shin bone we dug up when sorting our garden out last year (under several layers of paving slabs...brookside anyone?!). There used to be a farm around here many, many years ago.
Anyway...I fancy using that as the lid handle (seen something similar in the states). Kind of brings the animal full circle...?! :?

Cheers.

Very cool idea with the cow bone, I demand pictures! ;) Sounds like you're well on the way with parts

Fish is an easy one to do - just pick an oily fish like trout, salmon or mackerel and give it a couple of hours in a brine first. Smoked prawn skewers are awesome too :D

Vegetables too - smoked potato wedges are fantastic. I've also made a smoke-roasted garlic soup that was a real hit. The next challenge I want to tackle is making my own chipotle

Great...I've not really got as far as looking at recipes, but I guess that's when the fun starts. Spotted a few American sites that referenced salmon smoking: brining was mentioned (as was drying it out with a fan  ).

Parts wise, getting closer. Managed to source a couple of online sellers of stainless steel hex nipples and ball valves. Figured I'd saved a bit on the build already so could perhaps spend a few quid on the valves/nipples.
I'm betting copper piping would look nice, but I'd expect it would be a bit too much cost wise to justify...I'll look around.
I have a bit of plastic piping in the shed, but would be happier (even though the plastic would be external) for it to be metal. Will try and order that fire spray and rope/seal and maybe get the burn out of the way this weekend (and grind the lid off).

I should be able to drill through the bone and attach (via a long, thin set of pliers) nuts so it's directly attached to the lid screws (but not protruding out of the top section of bone). Bleached it and left it in boiling water over night so it's nice and white again.
Pics...definitely!

Cheers.

I'm getting a bag of cherry logs delivered tomorrow (well, today, but I just got in from work so it doesn't count as tomorrow until I've slept) so I'll post up a picture of what I get when it's dropped off. If it is £8.50 for the 10kg bag it'll be massively cheaper than ordering anything online. The place I bought logs from has recently put up their price to £40 for 10kg  luckily I still half 5kg or so of mesquite left for the rare occasion on which I cook nothing but beef. I'll probably have to give up using it after that

Great - aye, let us know. Be interested to see how much you get for £8.50.
I asked them (no reply yet) but do them deliver them as logs which you then have to chop yourself into chunks?
Have axe so happy to do that (great for pent up emotions...!).

I'm not sure, I invested in an axe and a log bomb for splitting some birch so no big deal if they're logs :D he's asked for £8 for the bag and a whole £1 for delivery. Seems fair enough! It's getting delivered at 3 so I'll post a picture

There's gotta be around 30kg of cherry here, for under a tenner!
