I was looking at getting a couple of fire bricks to separate my coals from drip pan but can only find ones for £15 each!!!Now I am not paying that so can I use ordinary bricks and wrap them in foil or would engineering bricks be better or non at all.I know I need to experiment but no harm in asking.

I've used both house bricks and fire bricks, I've found that if they're going to break they will break first time, personally I'd save your money and buy a couple of house bricks and wrap them in foil

Is the reason for using fire bricks then because they don't break?

Supposedly yes they are meant to withstand high temperatures

I've also been looking for fire brick, hopefully they'll help regualte the temp in my off set!!! but cant seem to find any in my local builders yards / merchants. I did notice these on ebay...

Has anyone used these or know if they would be suitable?

They're selling them in loads of differant quantities and they work out at just over £1 each with delivery, which is a bit cheeper than the ones you've found Dan (if these are any good that is).

Vermiculite is used in the backing of boilers and such like so should handle the heat well enough.



Other opinions are available

Sod it i am going to use normal bricks as i have some and see how i get on with them and let you all know.

IMHO a couple of layers of foil around the house bricks and they should be okay. After all the bricks are usually still standing after a house fire, scorched but still standing.
