Hi

can you tell me if I can smoke with any type of Oak tree. I fell what I think is a turkey Oak last year at my mums house and have been back to reclaim some of the tree. I have spit this into chunks and left it to dry out in my shed. Also can you use any type of cherry tree? My mum also has a lot of either wild cherry trees or bird cherry trees behind her house, I'm waiting for the cherry's to ripen to see if there edible.

Phil

Turkey Oak is great for smoking.

There's a thread for smoking woods on this forum..

I think the general consensus is that if it's a fruit tree you are ok - so the cherry should be fine (http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/79030/wild-cherry). Whether or not the fruit is edible or poisonous doesn't seem to make a difference to whether or not you can smoke with the wood - for example conkers cause stomach upsets but the wood is fine to smoke with.

The turkey oak seems fine too: http://www.forestryforum.com/board/inde ... ic=39085.0

Hope that helps.
