Not really failsafe, they're quite tricky to control, but a few tips:

- Get a clay saucer - this will retain heat and stabilise the temperature
- Open the top vent and use the bottom one to control the temps - this ensures a clean fire and no nasty creosote tastes
- Decent remote thermometer so you can monitor it easily
- Don't faff too much - I always used to faff with the vents constantly, once you have a stablish temp just let it be! :)
- Use less coal, for low and slow you don't need a huuge amount of charcoal to start with, you add more over time. As an example I use about half a chimney starter's worth of lumpwood and that will let me keep the desired temps for low n slow.

Hope that helps a bit!

How much charcoal are you putting on? A quarter to a half a chimney of heat beads should it.

I light a weber portable chimney full of coals which seems to be about the right amount for a 2 zone setup in a weber 47cm. If I was lighting it for grilling I would need about twice that amount.

You could monitor using your Smartphone temperature from anyhwere.... could be a very interesting tool

I think I'd wait until the device was in full time production and had been reviewd by more acle persons than myself. It seems like a good idea, then again so did Betamax :D

I can't see the battery lasting for 12-15 hours you might need for a long smoke. Might be OK if there was the facility for using a larger external battery. But, for a wifi enabled device, the price isn't bad - $99 for a dual probe. I built my arduino bluetooth enabled version for less, but I could put alot more probes on it if I choose.
