Feel free to ask any questions, one of the experts will certainly respond, don't be afraid to ask anything, we were all beginners at some point.

I used Halford's engine enamel paint mate. £7.49 for 250ml. Not cheap but it looks class! :D

I bought 2 tins at the time but infact 1 tin did the whole job, including the lid! I used it sparingly and 1 coat was enough. Lucky enough my mate is looking to build one now that he's seen mine so he's buying the spare tin of paint off me lol

DAMMIT WE'VE HIT A MAJOR SNAG!!!

A guy I showed my basket to thinks that the mesh is galvanised! I have asked my mate (who got me it) to go see can he find some packaging belonging to it to find out for sure.

I think it was Keith on here who said it might be plasterers mesh? I have found plasterer's mesh on wickes.co.uk, and guess what? IT'S GALVANISED! - http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/220379

Damn, damn, damn, damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

I don't know if this will make any difference to you but the basket I am using was galvanised and really old. I made a fire and just chucked it in there for a good long burn, the coating started to peel off. when it was done, I sanded it clean. so far so good. probably controversial, but there you are. by the way, I am not saying this is what you should do, just throwing it out there...

Hmmmmm that is quite the idea Si mate!

I bought one of these off ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190770431221? ... 1497.l2649 - for the lid and grill for my UDSl! I am left with the bottom half. It's too big to fit inside the drum but I'm sure I can grind it down to size! Would I also need holes in the sides? Especially if I'm going to burn the coal top to bottom?

Nice one mate cheers

EDIT** My only thought is that this 57cm kettle that I used as a donor, will probably be too wide to use as a charcoal basket, even if I do cut it down :(

Panic over!!!

Thankfully I have very resourceful friends and one of them sorted me out tonight with a massive sheet of stainless steel mesh from his work.

I now have a safe to use, galvanise free charcoal basket!
