Hello all

Post by TakingtheBrisket »

Hi, just joined forum yesterday after several visits. Must say its a good source of info and banter, well done guys! Ive got 2 questions for now if anyone can help:
1. Ive got a local woodland centre by me that I get good charcoal from and oak wood. They've also got sweet chestnut, anyone smoked with this? Was thinking of using it brisket.
2. Ive seen this book by BBQ revolution, its in PDF format has anyone read/recommend it?
Thanks Jon

Welcome to the forum! pretty sure i have seen a chat somewhere about chestnut although cant remember the outcome. No idea about the book but you will probably find similar information on here without needing to buy anything. Also if you are considering competition which that guide is aimed towards consider one of our hands on grassroots comps

I've not hot smoked with it but have some a use for cold smoking. It has a sweet profile very akin to maple.

I've read the book/pdf and it's ok but there are much better alternatives out there. It only provides a list of pre made sauces & rubs that you can't buy over here and the cooking instructions aren't great & all it covers is cooking chicken, ribs, pork butt & brisket, nothing else.

Wicked good bbq is a much better alternative to this as they provide rub & sauce recipes that you can make at home and lots of other stuff.

I got some sweet chestnut and Cyderpig (Simon) on here told me it would be a good smoking wood. He was right :) Very nice flavour, relatively sweet for a nut wood, not quite as intense as oak but not far off!
