Wsm & lumpwood

I am going to order WSM 47cm tonight, and see the site sells heatbeads,

All I have ever used is lumpwood, but have read on some if the US sites to use Briquettes in a WSM.

Are heatbeads really that good? And can they be used with the minion method?

First time i used a wsm was at grassroots, it was lit at 19.30 with half a bag of heatbeads, it was still going 1pm next day but it did have a pitmaster on it

When i used them, they were great, long lasting with constant temps but bit of a pain to light. Definitely need fire lighters under the chimney. They take a while to get lit.

Yes they are fine with the minion method and won't give of any odour that will taint your food.

Heat beads are great, but quite expensive. Quality briquettes are better than lump for temperature consistency, but no reason you shouldn't use lump in your wsm. I use restaurant grade lump most of the time with no issues.

I'd use lump or cocoshell briquettes. Pound for pound better value than heat beads and both will give you more than enough heat for a long minion style cook

Bummer, seems they've stopped selling them, looks like when I sold my WSM and moved to lump only in my egg the demand in the UK must have dropped too low

Looks like heat beads or lump are the only options now, personally id go for lump
