Importing gas BBQ from Australia

Post by aNUFCfan »

Hi All,
I'm new to these forums, but have already spent more time than my missus would like looking around.

I'm in the process or repatriating my family from Australia. Looking online, it appears that I can get a much nicer BBQ here than in the UK for the same money (even with the strong AU$ right now).

What I'd like to know form the helpful people here is:
1) Will an Australian BBQ work with gas canisters baught in the UK (different regulator required?)
2) I would consider plumbing my BBQ into the mains gas. In Aus, this requires the gas nozzles to be replaced with wider bore ones, to allow for the lower gas pressure. Would these replacement nozzles be appropriate for the UK?

If more details are needed, please ask. However, I have no idea about the gas in Aussie mains having the same chemical properties as those in UK supplies, which I think is what my questions boil down to.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am pretty sure I have seen a similar thread elsewhere, i will have a search for you. Best case scenario would be a new regulator which you can pick up in any DIY store over here. I dont have a clue about mains gas, its something I would stay well away from, not because its gas, but wouldnt be confident in offering advice on the subject.

Thanks very much for the reply Toby.
My research agrees with what you think - a new regulator.

Regarding the jets, apparently different sizes are needed for bottle gas and mains gas, because they have a different calorific value. I need to find out if the UK mains has the same calorific value as AUS, and I have no Idea where to find that out...

I looked through the forums here for similar threads and didn't see one, but I'm not familiar with the forums. I'd be happy to be proved wrong, ideally with a thread that contains all my answers :D
