Will this work?

Feel free to ask any questions, one of the experts will certainly respond, don't be afraid to ask anything, we were all beginners at some point.

Will this work?

Guy's I was wondering about being able to roast a full chicken in a weber smokey joe and cam up with this:

Do you reckon It could work? Would the coals be too close to the chicken\meat? Would a drip tray with some water help underneath?

Cheers

Why not? Put the coals right over the other side of the Q and the lid vent as far away from the coals as you can. pour a little bit of beer of your choice inside and nice rub on that chicken would be nice as well.

Let us know how it goes

Think my only worry on a smokey joe would be whether you could get sufficient coals in there and the chicken.

Many Thanks.

I have actually made some charcoal holders so I can use them to keep the coals over to the edge. Once the snow melts enough I'll give it a try. Still want to add a couple of air vents beneath the coal grate first too.

I'll post back with the results.

Cheers.

Well, the one benefit of this contraption is that it'll be easy to add additional coals if needs be. The concern over getting enough coals in there is why I didn't go for the coals on both sides, I reckoned it would be best to keep them in the 1 larger group.

My major concern would be the plastic packaging on the chicken melting

Would it not stop the juices from escaping? :?

It's frozen which may present a slight issue as well, but it was the most 'chicken sized' thing to hand to check the lid would fit.

Many many years ago my mam won a raffle from our local Dewhurst at Christmas, a stuffed oven ready turkey. About an hour or so into the cooking there was a horrid pong from the oven. On checking the "Master Butchers" at Dewhurst had stuffed the turkey okay, but put the giblets back in in a plastic bag. I can only assume their "stuffer" picked up the wrong bird to stuff. Luckily we were having Christmas at my sister's so we had a 'spare'. It was great watching the face of the butcher when we took the bird back and exchanged it for a lovely whole leg of piggie after Christmas just right for the New Year :D

I recon this could work.
Drip pan under the cage, as has been said already with a little alc type bev in it.
Go easy with the coals, only top up when needed, and only a few at a time.

Cheers, I added a bottom air vent this evening, I hope to try a whole chicken over the weekend.
