new to this smoking game

Hi folks absolute beginner not a clue what I am doing but really want to learn have acquired a 55 gal drum ready to turn it into a UDS just getting the required parts to make ash pan and fire basket/diffuser plate .

I have read that the 57cm grill rack from the weber smoker fits in a 55 gal drum is this correct as I have had a quick measure of my drum and it seems like a very close fit any advice re construction use of uds will be very welcome one last thing where do I put the temp gauge above or below the cooking racks

Search the forum there are a few UDS threads along with some very knowledgeable builders.
